Feel Insecure at the Gym? 5 Ways to Show Up in God’s Strength

Feeling insecure at the gym? Kim Dolan Leto shares Bible-based tips for building confidence and working out with God.
Feel insecure at the gym? You’re not alone—but here’s how NOT to feel that way. I’m sharing 5 confidence-builders and 5 things you can do today to go—as David said in Psalms—in the STRENGTH of the Lord (Psalm 71:16).

I want to speak to something so many Christian women feel but rarely say out loud—we can feel insecure at the gym.

Have you ever walked into your studio—or pressed play on a workout—only to suddenly feel insecure, small, or stuck in your head?

Maybe you’ve thought:

  • “I need to lose weight before I go back.”
  • “What if I run into someone from my past?”
  • “I don’t know what to do.”

Or maybe there’s a lie you’ve been believing that’s taking up space in your heart—a lie that doesn’t belong anymore.

If this sounds familiar, this episode is for you.

Because you are strong. You are confident. You are His!

And you don’t need anyone’s permission to show up—especially not when you’re walking in God’s strength.

When You Feel Insecure at the Gym, Show Up in God’s Strength

Here’s what I know:
Some days, your workout space feels like your happy place.
Other days, it can feel like a battlefield—especially if your confidence is under attack.

And you might be wondering… why does something so good—like taking care of your body—feel so complicated?

Let me tell you:

The gym is more than a place to move your body. It’s a space where the enemy whispers lies and tries to defeat you. It’s where your identity, your discipline, and your surrender show up.

And when fear, shame, or something from your past tries to enter that space, it can rattle you.

But here’s what God says:

  • “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
  • “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” — Isaiah 41:10

That space where you show up to get stronger, fitter, healthier?
It’s yours now.
It’s not fear’s.
It’s not shame’s.
It’s not your past’s.

It’s where you come to say: Like David said in Psalm 71:16,
“I will go in the strength of the Lord God.”

And Sister, there are days when that’s exactly what we have to do.

Not in our motivation… not in our energy… but in His strength alone.

And the beautiful part?
That’s always more than enough.

As a woman of God, you have the power to follow through.
You’re not led by your feelings. You’re led by the Spirit.

You can do it afraid!
You can do it when you don’t feel like it.
And on these days, remember how much better you feel when you’re done. Let that fuel your motivation.

If You Feel Uncomfortable in Workout Spaces—Like You Don’t Belong… Remember This:

  • You don’t have to earn your place—you already belong.
  • You’ve poured sweat, prayers, and progress into that space.
  • It’s not about proving anything—it’s about showing up in faith.
  • This is your sanctuary. You’ve claimed this ground with God.
  • You’re not alone in the chaos—you’re grounded in Christ.
  • The gym may feel overwhelming, but having a plan rooted in peace gives you stability.
  • Movement clears the spiritual fog and reminds you who’s really in charge: Jesus.

As a woman of God, you have the power to follow through.
You’re not led by your feelings. You’re led by the Spirit.

Even when it’s hard, you keep showing up—and that’s what makes you strong.
You are becoming—every single time.

Every rep, every walk, every stretch is more than physical.
It’s spiritual. It’s a declaration:
“I can do hard things because Christ strengthens me.”

This isn’t just fitness. It’s faith in action.
Your workout is a form of worship.
Your discipline is obedience.
And your strength? It’s not from the world—it’s from the One who made you.

A Strong. Confident. His. Podcast Listener Asked…

“I’ve been working on my nutrition and inviting Jesus into that part of my life, but I still really struggle to build the habit of going to the gym. Do you have any advice for staying consistent with workouts and keeping God at the center?”

Sister, I hear you. And I know you’re not alone in this.

So many women are doing the hard work with food, but when it comes to showing up to the gym, it feels overwhelming or inconsistent. So let me give you some practical, faith-first encouragement:

5 Ways to Show Up in God’s Strength

  1. Start small and schedule it.
You don’t need to start off going 5 days a week. Start with 2 or 3. Write it in your calendar like a meeting with Jesus. Something like: “Monday 9:00—Workout with God.”
  2. Pray before you move.
Ask God to give you strength, bless your efforts and protect your body and mind. And then Turn on Christian music. Here’s a great playlist for you.
  3. Create a simple routine.
Pick 3 workouts to repeat weekly. Don’t overthink it. Just begin. For example: If you’re doing legs, a Fit Gods’ Way session could include: Prayer, Christian Music, 3 sets of 8–12 on 4 different machines (Examples: leg press, hamstring curl, glute kickbacks, and walking lunges) and an optional Cardio Finisher: 30-minute walk, cycle, elliptical, or stepmill.
  4. Watch for the Holy Spirit’s nudges.Sometimes I keep seeing the same verse. Or the same song plays over and over. Or I open the Bible to a Scripture I needed—that’s the Holy Spirit saying, “I’m with you.”
  5. Be consistent—not perfect. You don’t have to crush every workout. You just need to keep showing up in His strength.

Fit Gods’ Way 30-Day Transformation Course Review

“Kim’s FIT God’s Way 30-Day Transformation challenge course was exactly what I needed. As a chronic dieter and seemingly never happy with my body and my weight, it really put things into perspective for me. I learned to go back to basics, put God first, truly love and respect my body for what it can do and I learned to give myself grace. It’s amazing to think that in my entire life of being a Christian, although struggling here and there with my faith… And all my issues with my body and diet and the binge-and-restrict cycle, etc.… That all I had to do was invite God into my health and fitness journey. I have never felt more in control, yet, at ease with how I move my body and what foods I’m choosing to put into my mouth. I looked forward to every Monday when a new module opened up and I got to jump on a zoom call with Kim and all the other fit sisters in Christ! I highly recommend this program if you’re considering it—do not sleep on it, click that button! I cannot wait to meet you! “– Shawn

A Prayer for When You Feel Insecure at the Gym

Dear God,
You know how hard this is.
You see the days we feel too weak to try again.
You know the silent battles we fight in our minds and in our mirrors.
Thank You for never shaming us, only inviting us closer.
When we feel like we don’t belong—remind us we belong to You.
When we feel small or unseen—remind us that You call us chosen and strong.
Help us show up in Your strength, not our own.
Let our workouts be worship. Let our movement be a moment with You.
Give us grace for the days we feel off, and fire in our hearts to stay faithful.
Jesus, You are our reason, our rhythm, and our reset.
We surrender the pressure, the perfection, and the comparison.
We receive Your power, Your peace, and Your purpose.
We are not alone.
We are not behind.
We are becoming.
In Jesus’ name, amen.

Recap with Action Steps For When You Feel Insecure at The Gym

  • Recognize when the gym feels like a spiritual battle—and remember, you’re not alone. Take that struggle to God and let Him meet you there.
  • Stop letting insecurity lead. Start each workout by praying for strength and showing up in the confidence that comes from Christ. The enemy is trying to get you to quit—don’t let him win.
  • When motivation fades, lean on discipline and faith. Don’t wait to “feel” ready—schedule it, pray over it, and take the step.
  • If you’re doing well with food but struggling to move consistently, give yourself grace and simplify your approach. You don’t need perfect—you just need to begin.
  • Reframe your workout as worship. It’s not just physical—it’s spiritual. Every rep, every walk, every stretch can be time spent with God.
  • Let go of pressure. Build a grace-based routine that honors your body and invites Jesus into every step.

Frequently Asked Questions For When You Feel Insecure at the Gym

Q: How do I overcome insecurity at the gym as a Christian woman?
A: Start by remembering you already belong because your worth comes from Christ not what your body looks like. You don’t have to earn your place—you’ve been called and equipped by God. Begin with prayer, set a simple workout plan, and focus on consistency in Christ over perfection. Showing up in God’s strength is the most powerful way to break through insecurity.

Q: Is working out a form of worship?
A: Yes, it absolutely can be. When you move your body with a surrendered heart, your workouts become more than physical—they become moments with God. Worship isn’t confined to a church building. Every rep, stretch, and step can honor Him. Romans 12:1 NIV says: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”

Q: What if I’m consistent with food but struggle with fitness?
A: That’s more common than you think. Many women find nutrition easier to control than movement. But God wants to walk with you in both. Start small—two or three days a week. Make it sacred, not stressful. Invite Him into your fitness just like you do your meals, and He’ll help you stay consistent.
