What’s Really Happening in Your Body (and What You Can Do About It)

Are you waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, feeling anxious for no reason, gaining weight even when you’re doing everything right… and wondering, what is happening to my body?
Friend, you’re not alone. And you’re not losing your mind. You’re walking through menopause—one of the most misunderstood, under-supported, and spiritually stretching seasons of a woman’s life.
This is Part 1 of Menopause for Christian Women a powerful 3-part series for women in perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause who need both answers and encouragement. In this episode, we’re diving into what’s really happening in your body—why your hormones feel like they’re on a rollercoaster, and how to support your health with wisdom from the Word, not the world.
You’ll learn:
- What menopause actually is (and what it’s not)
- Why you’re feeling so off physically, mentally, and emotionally
- How to respond with grace, peace, and practical steps
- What God’s Word says about this season of your life
And if this resonates with you, don’t miss Part 2 and Part 3 of this Menopause for Christian Women series—Episodes 266 and 267 I wrote them for you to remind you: what you’re walking through is real, and you are not alone.
Menopause for Christian Women Foundational Scripture – Psalm 92:13-15
Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
They shall still bear fruit in old age;
They shall be fresh and flourishing,To declare that the Lord is upright;
He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Menopause Support for Christian Women
What Are the Early Symptoms of Menopause?
I remember being 45 and going to the doctor because I felt completely off:
- Fatigued
- Foggy
- Dealing with such heavy periods they initially thought it was a blood disorder
It turned out to be perimenopause.
What came next:
- Insomnia
- Hot flashes
- Anxiety spikes that made me feel like I was losing control of my own body
If that’s where you are right now, I want you to know: you’re not crazy, and you’re not alone.
Watch my Hot Mess of a Hormone Journey Here
Now, a decade later—and five years post-menopause—I’ve found a new rhythm of life that honors my body, my hormones, and most importantly, my faith.
This is a season, not your forever. It’s a chapter in your story—not the whole book.
And if you’re wondering, “Are you on hormones?” the answer is no. I tried them, and I’ll share more about that in Part 2—what happened, why I stopped, and how I’ve supported my body naturally ever since.

How Long Does Menopause Last—and What’s Normal?
Menopause officially begins when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual cycle. But the real changes happen in the years before (perimenopause) and the years after (postmenopause).
Perimenopause:
- Usually starts in your late 30s to mid-40s
- Can last 4 to 10 years
- Hormones begin fluctuating unpredictably
Menopause:
- One calendar day—12 months since your last period
Postmenopause:
- Every day after that, for the rest of your life
These shifts:
- Are not a punishment
- Are a God-designed biological transition
- Can feel confusing and terrifying without understanding and support
Why Am I Gaining Weight During Menopause
Let’s talk about your hormones. During perimenopause and menopause, estrogen and progesterone decline—and they don’t do it gently. They swing like a rollercoaster.
You might feel:
- Wired but tired
- Emotionally fragile
- Bloated or inflamed
- Foggy and forgetful
- Craving sugar or carbs constantly
- Anxious for no reason
- Like you’re watching your life happen from outside yourself
Estrogen:
- Supports mood, metabolism, bone density, and brain function
Progesterone:
- Promotes calm, sleep, and balance
As they drop, your body feels the effects everywhere.
Your HPA axis (stress response system) is also impacted:
- Without estrogen, it becomes dysregulated
- Your body stays in fight-or-flight mode
- You feel drained without a clear trigger
How to Sleep Better During Menopause
Disrupted sleep is one of the most common complaints during menopause.
Hot flashes, night sweats, and racing thoughts can rob you of rest. Here are a few tips to create calm:
- Practice 4-7-8 breathing (inhale 4 sec, hold 7, exhale 8)
- Stretch before bed while reading a Psalm aloud
- Take silent walks and pray as you go
- Splash cool water on your face to reset your stress response
- Say no without guilt and guard your time and energy
John 14:27 reminds us: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”
What Does God Say About Menopause and Aging?
This season isn’t just physical. It’s spiritual.
God didn’t design your body to betray you in this season. He designed this time to:
- Bring you into deeper wisdom
- Strengthen your faith
- Build dependence on Him
The world may mock aging, but the Word says it’s a time of fruitfulness and legacy.
Proverbs 31:30: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
This is not a decline. It’s a refining.
Faith-Based Tips: What to Eat, How to Move, and How to Create Calm
Every decision matters in this season. Here are three practical ways to honor God in your health and feel better in your body.
Prioritize Protein and God-Made Food
Estrogen used to help stabilize blood sugar. Without it, cravings go up.
To support your body:
- Eat protein at every meal (chicken, fish, lentils, eggs, clean protein powder)
- Eat every 4–5 hours
- Drink water before caffeine
- Focus on God-made foods
1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
Start Strength Training
Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass, is real—but preventable. Strength training:
- Protects your metabolism
- Supports balance, bones, and brain health
How to start:
- Strength train 2–3 times per week
- Focus on compound movements: squats, pushes, pulls
- Build strength for the decades to come
Proverbs 31:17: “She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.”
Create Calm and Learn to Say No
Your nervous system is already overstimulated. Learn to:
- Set boundaries
- Say no without guilt
- Slow down and breathe
- Pray as you walk
This isn’t about doing more—it’s about walking with Jesus through every step.
You’re Not Alone—This Is a Sacred Season
You’re not falling apart. You’re being refined.
This may be one of the most vulnerable seasons of your life. But it can also be one of the most powerful.
God is still writing your story.
Philippians 1:6: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” Psalm 1:3: “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water… and whatever he does shall prosper.”
Recap: What to Remember and What to Do
- You are not crazy—and you are not alone
- Menopause is a season, not a sentence
- Your hormones may feel off—but your faith can be your anchor
- You can eat, move, and rest in a way that honors God
- Sarcopenia is real—but preventable
- Peace is possible—when Jesus is at the center
Let’s Pray
Dear God, This season feels unfamiliar, and some days I don’t even feel like myself. But I know You see me. You know exactly what’s happening in my body, and You promise to walk with me through it all.
Remind me that I’m still Your daughter—loved, seen, and held—no matter how I feel. Give me clarity where there’s confusion. Give me energy when I’m drained. And help me care for myself in a way that honors You.
Show me how to make decisions that bring life and peace. Help me to listen to my body with compassion, not frustration. And please place the right people—doctors, friends, encouragers—on my path so I can move forward in wisdom.
This isn’t easy, Lord. But I trust You’re doing something good in me through it.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

While I’m not a doctor, I’ve walked through every part of this journey—from perimenopause to menopause and now postmenopause—and I want to come alongside you as a sister in Christ to share how faith sustained me through it all. That said, your relationship with your doctor is essential. If you don’t have a provider who listens, cares, and tests your hormones, please make advocating for your health a top priority. You don’t have to figure this out alone.
