3 Things I’d Do Differently If I Were Starting My Fitness Journey Today

Can I just say—you’re not alone if you feel like you’re always starting over in your fitness journey.

I’ve been there too. Wondering why nothing seems to stick… why I keep falling off track… and why I always feel like I’m starting my fitness journey over again.

Looking back, I did a lot of the “right” things the wrong way. I chased perfection, relied on willpower, and treated my body like a project instead of a temple.

But everything changed when I invited God into it.

If I could go back and start over, here are the 3 things I’d do differently—because they’ve become the foundation of how I live now and what I teach inside Fit God’s Way.

Okay, let’s dive in.

3 Things I’d Do Differently If I Were Starting My Fitness Journey Today

1. Seek God First—Not Another Plan

I used to search for answers—what to eat, how to work out, what routine to try next.
But not once did I ask:
“God, what do You say about this?”

Here’s what His Word says:

Proverbs 3:5–8 (NKJV):
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He shall direct your paths.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
It will be health to your flesh,
And strength to your bones.”

That’s real health—spiritual, emotional, and physical. It starts when we trust God and acknowledge Him in every part of our lives—including fitness.

Action Step:
Pray before you plan.
Write this in your journal or planner:
“God, I invite You into my health today. Lead me and direct my path. Help me make choices that honor You.”

2. Surrender Daily—Not Just Once

Motivation fades. Life happens. But when you surrender daily, your choices become consistent—not because of willpower, but because of worship.

Romans 12:1 (NIV):
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy,
to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—
this is your true and proper worship.”

You might be questioning the concept of fitness as worship?

Fitness is worship when it becomes an act of honoring God with your body—not obsessing over it, punishing it, or idolizing results.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NIV):
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you, whom you have received from God?
You are not your own; you were bought at a price.
Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

This Scripture reminds us that our bodies aren’t our own to abuse, neglect, or idolize.
They’re a sacred place where the Holy Spirit dwells.

When we take care of our bodies with love, stewardship, and surrender, we’re not just “getting healthy”—we’re honoring God with our temple.

Think of it like this… your body is not a project to fix—it’s a temple to honor.

That’s why fitness, when done God’s way, becomes an act of worship, not obsession.
It’s about surrendering your health journey to Him—how you eat, move, think, and live—and letting those choices glorify Him instead of the world.

When your health becomes worship, your mindset shifts from pressure to peace.

Action Step:
Write a daily surrender prayer you can speak before your meals or workouts.
Here’s a simple one:

“God, I give You my body today. Help me choose food that fuels me, movement that strengthens me, and thoughts that glorify You.”

3. Show Up in the Spirit—Not Willpower

This was my biggest lesson:
Willpower runs out. The Holy Spirit doesn’t.

I used to white-knuckle my way through workouts and meal plans. I burned out every time.

Now I ask:
“Holy Spirit, strengthen me to move today. To eat with self-control. To honor You.”

Zechariah 4:6:
“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord.”

You don’t have to feel strong to show up. You just have to be willing—and God will meet you there.

Dear God,
I’ve tried to do this in my own strength, and I’m worn out.
I’ve chased plans, perfection, and pressure—and none of it gave me peace.
Today, I surrender it all to You.
Help me seek You first in my health.
Show me what’s been holding me back.
Replace my striving with Your stillness, and my willpower with Your Spirit.
Help me see my body as a temple—not a project.
Give me the grace to show up, even when it feels hard.
I want my health to honor You—every choice, every step, every breath.
